أبوه: عليّ بن أبي طالب، سيّد الأوصياء، وعماد الأصفياء، أمير المؤمنين، وإمام الصالحين.. متراس الحقّ ونبراس الهدى بعد رسول الله صلّى الله عليه وآله وسلّم.
أمّه: فاطمة بنت حِزام المكنّاة بـ « أُمّ البنين ».. المرأة النجيبة المخلصة الفاضلة.
إخوته: الإمام الحسن المجتبى، والإمام الحسين عليهما السّلام.. وباقي أولاد أمير المؤمنين عليه السّلام. أمّا إخوته لأمّه وأبيه فهم: عبدالله وعثمان وجعفر.
أخواته: زينب العقيلة، وأمّ كلثوم.. وباقي بنات أمير المؤمنين عليه السّلام.
ولادته: وُلد في المدينة المنوّرة في الرابع من شعبان الخير سنة 36 هجريّة.
كنيته: أبو الفضل.
ألقابه: السقّاء، قمر العشيرة، وقمر بني هاشم.
مواقفه: شهد معركة صفّين مع أبيه أمير المؤمنين عليه السّلام، ولازم أخاه الإمامَ الحسن عليه السّلام بعد شهادة أبيه، ثمّ لازم أخاه الحسين عليه السّلام ولم يفارقه حتّى فرّق الموت بينهما في أرض كربلاء.
زوجته: لبابة بنت عبيدالله بن العبّاس بن عبدالمطّلب.
أولاده: عبيدالله ـ وذريّة العبّاس عليه السّلام منه ـ، والفضل ـ وبه كُنّي عليه السّلام ـ، والقاسم.. وله بنت واحدة.
عمره المبارك: 34 سنة.
قبره الشريف: شامخ رفعةً وجلالاً عليه صندوق نفيس، وفوقه شبّاك زاهٍ، ثمّ قبّة ذهبيّة تشعّ هيبة وبهاء في كبد السماء، تُرى من عشرات الأميال. والمسلمون يزدحمون من جميع العالم لزيارته والسّلام عليه، والصلاة والدعاء عنده.
